Applied Science Level 3

Course Overview

This Applied Science course enables students to study the principles and applications of biology, chemistry and physics, as well as practical scientific procedures and techniques. In addition to this, students will have the opportunity to develop their investigation skills. 

The qualification is designed to be taken alongside A Levels. It can link to learning in a range of A Level subjects such as A Level Psychology and A Level Sociology. The course is an Alternative Academic Qualification (AAQ) designed for post-16 students with an interest in science. Equivalent to one A Level in size, it is suitable for students looking to develop their applied knowledge and skills in science alongside two A Levels.The course is assessed using 50% external examinations. For the remaining 50% of the qualification, students will research, plan and carry out a detailed scientific investigation. This non-examined assessment is marked internally by teachers.

Minimum Entry Requirements

  • Five GCSEs at Grade 4 or above including:
  • 5/4 in Combined Science or a 5 and 4 in Higher Tier Science subjects
  • A GCSE Grade 4 in English and maths
