Politics A Level

Course Overview

Politics has an impact on every aspect of our daily lives; from health, travel and the environment, to education, justice and international relations. By studying Politics, you’ll gain a clearer understanding of how the world works.

The first year of the course focuses on politics in the United Kingdom. We study the differences between the main political parties (Labour, Conservatives, Liberal Democrats), electoral systems, voter behaviour and the media, and democracy and representation in the UK. We also study UK government, namely the Constitution, parliament, the prime minister and the cabinet.

In the second year we study politics in the USA. This includes the US Constitution, the presidency, Congress and the Supreme Court. You will also study the ideas that lie behind political action: socialism, conservatism, liberalism and other ideologies.

“Politics has been responsible for some of the most interesting and exciting lessons in my time at Northgate. The teachers are passionate about the subject.”
